Abstract

The potency of the first-row transition metal complexes with Schiff's base ligand as an antioxidant has been widely studied by researchers. In this study, hydrazone-type Schiff base compounds, salicylaldehyde-2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone (SDPH), resulted from the condensation of salicylaldehyde (1.5 mmol) and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (1.5 mmol) were synthesized and characterized with 1H-NMR. The synthesized SDPH was used as ligands in the formation of Co(II) metal complexes. The Co(II)-SDPH complexes were synthesized with reflux reaction at 60oC for 6 hours in molar ratio 1:3. Triethylamine is used to synthesis Co(II)-SDPH, which serves to deprotonate SDPH ligands. ESI-MS analysis showed that the complex is a neutral dimeric complex. The complex has the chemical formula [Co2(SDPH)2[(Et)3N]2(acn)2(OH)2} ([M+Na]+ = 1061 g/ mol), shown on the ESI-MS spectrum. Coordinate bonds between Co (II) metal ions with ligands are observed in the presence of shifting of the C=N wave number, as well as the loss of the vibrating peaks of the O-H groups to the infrared spectra of complexes. The IR spectrum of complexes was suggested that SDPH behave as a bidentate ligand through the azomethine nitrogen atom and phenolic oxygen atom. The ligand and its Co(II) complex have been screened for antioxidant activity against DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazine). Based on the activity test results, the IC50 value of Co(II)-SDPH complex was lower than ligand. These results show that Co(II)-SDPH are potentials as antioxidants.

Abstract

Methyl Orange was a textile waste that polluted the environment and harmed aquatic ecosystems and human life. It could affect the photosynthesis of oxygen regeneration and disrupt the biological activity of microbes in the water. One of the ways to deal with these wastes by adsorption using  Nata de coco. Nata de coco was used as an alternative adsorbent made from cellulose, which was a waste of coconut water in the process of making it easy, inexpensive, and biodegradable. This study aims to determine the effect of contact time and mass of  Nata de coco adsorbents on the adsorption of methyl orange. This research method includes three stages were adsorbent preparation, adsorption, and UV-Vis spectrometer analysis. The adsorption process was carried out with contact time variations of 30 and 60 minutes, variations in the mass of the adsorbent 0.05g; 0.1g; and 0.15g. The results showed the optimum adsorption conditions occurred at 60 minutes of contact time and an adsorbent mass of 0.15g with an adsorption efficiency of 44.66% and an adsorption capacity of 0.2066 mg/g.

Abstract

The problem in this research is that students are more familiar with the application of metallic bonding than its concept. This is because the characteristics of the concept are abstract concepts with real context. It makes students more interested in studying the phenomenon but lack to explain the concept and some students show misconception. Therefore this research aims to design learning sequences of metallic bonding topics using the framework model of educational reconstruction (MER). This sequence considers the students’ and scientists’ conception. Considering the initial conception of students in designing learning sequences provides benefits for students. Through MER, learning sequences begin by analyzing student conceptions through semi-structured interviews and concept maps designed by students. Scientific conception analysis is done through concept analysis of several text books that are often used in learning. There are three criteria of students’ conception they are prefer to scientist conception, misconception, and incompetence. Based on the three criteria, learning sequences are produced with the aim to bringing students' conceptions toward scientific conceptions.

Abstract

Antioxidants can be obtained from plants or animals. One of the plants that can be used as a source of antioxidants is katuk leaf (Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr.) and honey. The content of compounds in both materials that function as antioxidants are phenolic, flavonoids, and vitamin C. This study aims to analyze the levels of total phenolic, flavonoids, vitamin C, antioxidant activity, the effect of different compositions on combination treatments, and analyze the relationship between phenolic levels and vitamin C with antioxidant activity from the test sample. This study used an experimental method with a completely randomized design. Antioxidant activity was tested using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. The results showed phenolic levels of all test samples ranged from 0.509-23.205 mg GAE/g samples; flavonoids amounted to 0.027-17.329 mg QE/g samples, vitamin C amounted to 15,917-101,705 mg AA/g samples and IC50 of 114.213-20727.500 mg/l. The combination treatment with more katuk leaf composition can increase the levels of compounds and antioxidant activity. Phenolic levels and vitamin C have a moderate relationship with antioxidant activity with the correlation coefficient values of -0.480 and -0.500.
